What it is
MMICROWW is//
Microscopic photography
that explores the hidden, or maybe just largely forgotten,
natures of our universe.
I know, I know, you already spend all your time pondering the infinitude of our observable spectrum,
but just in case you’re having an off day connecting to the inexhaustible energy of the everything,
I’ve prepared some slides that may help to illustrate the concept.
Lesson 1:
SCALE INVARIANCE
(Could use a catchier name for the kids, but it’s cool I swear.)
For a lil' more backstory, I've also written a GLOB of words about MMICROWW's conception…

the artist
Really I can only take partial credit.
I just record what it is.
My role is that initial inspiration, the conjuration + creation on the slide.
Then I watch + wait as nature does it’s globular, crystalline thing.
Then the human abstraction kicks in,
the eyeballs to find similarities in texture to our life-size, or often telescopic views.
I use scientific materials for artistic purposes
+
my artistic purpose comments on material science.
This is not straight-up science nor is it purely aesthetic.
I use a chaotic, multi-disciplinary approach, pulling from both knowledge and ignorance.
I strongly believe we could use more collaboration of ideas in every field, and a humbling of the idealists.
…and quite frankly more coordination among us humans in general, but we’ll work our way up to that high stone monument of a topic on the BLOGELISK

I’m Laura
(and it’s not about me.)
But if it makes you feel better…
My degree is a BFA in Fashion Design from Massachusetts College of Art + Design. I have worked professionally in textile/ surface design and as a seamstress.
I love the feeling of producing materially what was first only thought.
Most of my free time is spent working on this project, listening to paranormal podcasts, or traipsing through wooded areas in search of ancient mysteries.
I am endlessly fascinated by the hidden/ unknown/ mysterious, and constantly wonder on the undeniable underlying natures of things.
All these varied interests have just recently been smashing together in the abyss to form MMICROWW, my attempt to make sense of innateness. Is there such a thing as universal truth? Can we touch it in these human hands?
More coming soon about my inspirations and explorations in the GLOB

PROCESS
Remember that microscope you used in high school?
I have one rigged with a digital camera…
I find different substances to experiment with- many of them household items- and mix them together, often adding color and texture with slide stains + crystallization mediums.
Insanity ensues on the slide, creating vast, varied, micro-landscapes for me to comb with my desktop aero-drone.
I am constantly surprised by the microscopic mysteries revealed.
Most often unedited, my photos are instead adjusted on the fly in an effort to record the raw reality of the surrealism.
I end up with thousands of photos, of which most I deem duds.
The best are added to my portfolio or become prints for products available in the SHOP !
